Why is it that when you go into a shop or restaurant your ears are inundated with so called music? I can be driven out of a shop where the decibel level is beyond bearable. God help the young staff, what will it do to their hearing over the years ahead.

I also have a problem in restaurants. I may have visited the restaurant at lunchtime and found the level of sound acceptable - but go back in the evening and between the din of (background) music and the rising levels of conversations trying to be heard over the noise,it can be impossible to hold a civilised converation. Perhaps that is why many other diners spend their time texting rather than trying to communicate with their fellow diners.

Is there a fear of holding a conversation? Is that why the music is so loud?
